From Faba Beans to Barley

Posted by Karena Wilson on

2020 saw the planting of several crops at home on our property in Dirranbandi.

In the ground this year we are lucky enough to have planted

  • Barley
  • Oats
  • Faba Beans
  • Wheat
  • Chickpea
One of these crops runs alongside our very long driveway and my daughter loves to make comment as we drive past each day

"Mum, do you know I helped plant that crop! It is Barley and that is what beer is made from."

....I wonder who told her that fun fact whilst on the tractor!? She is always learning when she heads to work with her Dad.

Anyway back to the figures, facts and numbers

  • This is the largest area of farming we have planted since 2016
  • We have just over 6,000 acres of dryland farming this year
  • Depending on the season, these crops will be harvested anytime from late September/early October through to November

What will happen to the grain?

We will hold onto the Barley, Oats and Faba Beans to use for stock feed when required. The Wheat and Chickpea will be sold.
